I face losing my insurance coverage December 1, when I will have to pay the full amount of my COBRA premium. My husband does not have healthcare coverage. Read this article in The Tennessean published this morning.

Down and Out in Unemployment Land
Both the husband and I have been down about our unemployment this week. He is almost at his first anniversary unemployed. Six weeks later I will hit my year long unemployed status. We have been rolling along on unemployment benefits, but those will be ending with our anniversaries.
He is without health care insurance, and I predict that I will have to drop my COBRA premiums December 1. I will no longer be able to afford them. We have learned that Publix gives free antibiotics if necessary. John got free antibiotics there last week for a sinus infection he had. Of course, he had to pay the doctor to write the prescription.
I am hitting more and more deadends in my job search. Right now, I am willing to take any position within a reasonable drive from my home to make money.
Life can change quickly in a year.

We Need Health Care Insurance
My husband made a profound statement at the dinner table tonight. He said that if we both employed with health care that we would not be so concerned with the debate in Congress. I disagree. I have always wanted some kind of national health insurance, but I want it more now that my husband has no insurance. I will not be able to afford my COBRA payments in a few months. I can only afford them now with assistance from ARRA (otherwise known as Stimulus Bill).
I am paying for my Congressional leaders to have health care. Why are they not concerned about helping me pay for mine?

Eight Months After Losing My Job
Besides the usual Michael Jackson death theories, I have gotten breaking news updates from the New York Times each day this week such as this one:

—–Bank of America Posts $2.42 Billion Profit on Trading Gains
Bank of America reported a quarterly profit of $2.42 billion,
or 33 cents per share, beating Wall Street forecasts.Like Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase earlier this week, it
reported a handsome profit from its trading business. But the
company, one of the most troubled big banks, said that
“difficult challenges lie ahead.”
WTF? All of the banks who received lucrative bailouts are making huge profits. I am still struggling along on unemployment checks and meager contract labor checks. I’m married to someone who does not have health insurance. I know some people on food stamps. I know someone who has had a car repossessed. I know someone who was turned down for a job because her only mode of transportation is a bicycle. I received another rejection letter this morning for a full time low wage paying job with decent benefits.
If we were not using our retirement funds to pay our mortgage, where would we be? What is going to happen to us when the unemployment runs out? I am thankful for the few dollars that the ARRA legislation is giving me to help me make my COBRA payments, or I would be without health insurance.
What is going on in this country? We NEED JOBS NOW.

Obama’s First 100 Days
CNN is making a big deal of this. I am impressed about his work ethic. Since I am on unemployment benefits, the stimulus package has aided me with extra money each week and help with my COBRA payments for a while.
I am glad that he is President. He has thrown us a lifeline, but we are not out of the deep yet.
