Thoughts about recovery.gov

As an unemployed worker, I have received a few dollars assistance from the stimulus bill, but what my husband and I really need are jobs. Has anyone received a job through the ARRA?

I know that for the first time ever, the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere has received $1 million from Metro Nashville Davidson County Government. I assume that this is stimulus money, since the Zoo has never received city funds in the past. And I keep hearing how the local government has asked its department heads to cut costs. I know that the University of Tennessee is able to make improvements with stimulus money. I see road projects developing with stimulus money because I see the recovery.gov signs on the highway.

I must admit that I am angry about the recovery.gov road signs. Why are we spending money on road signs when unemployment in Tennessee continues to rise?

Recovery is not happening fast enough for my husband and me. I need more than a road sign. This is too much like trickle down economics. I am becoming impatient.

Swine Flu

I mean, do we really need to panic about this? Are we participating in Stephen King’s The Stand? That is what I feel like watching a few minutes of CNN yesterday. I was exposed to a lot of strangers over the weekend by running in the half marathon and volunteering at the Nashville Zoo. Were those people handing me water and Cytomax at the water stops during the race handing me flu germs? And on purpose?

What about all those Publix workers at the finish line with the food? Did the fruits come through Mexico?

Someone coughed at the Zoo yesterday.  Should I panic?

I received the swine flu vaccination back in the 70s. Is it still good? A coworker’s arm turned black from the innoculation.

I’ll go easy on the caffeine this morning.

CNN just showed a clip of the hundreds lined up at the Nashville Zoo to apply for 60 seasonal jobs. The meerkats were well represented in a clip watching out for danger.

More Layoffs Coming….

I was volunteering at the Nashville Zoo today, when a photographer and a reporter came by to report on the decorating of the Victorian house on the property. I learned that Gannett newspapers will lay off 10% of their staffs at each newspaper.

The reporter told me that her son will be going to Iraq on Tuesday; then Wednesday, she learns whether or not she has a job.
